Breeding the channeled apple snail

Females climb out and lay bright pink egg clutches on hard surfaces up to about 50 cm above the water; the hatchlings drop into the water. Eggs drown if kept submerged.

Step by step

Pairing

Any two.

Breeding tank

Tank with an air gap.

What starts it

Warm water.

Eggs and young

Clutches average about 200-300 (range up to about 1,000) pink eggs, laid every few weeks; they hatch in about 7-15 days.

Raising the fry

Young fall into the water.

Common mistakes
  • Escapes into the wild

Male or female

Separate sexes. Turn the snail upside down and look into the right side of the mantle cavity: males have a large penis sheath in front of the gills; females have none. Males also tend to have a rounder shell opening, but this is unreliable for single snails.

Can I breed it in my tank?

  • Good for a first breeding project.

Day-by-day plan

Typical for snails

  1. Day 0Egg clutch

Clutches appear on glass, plants or above the waterline.

  2. Day 14Hatching

Baby snails hatch in about 2–4 weeks. Too many? Feed less.
