Breeding the crystal red shrimp
The female carries the eggs under her abdomen until they hatch as tiny copies of the adults (no free larval stage).
Step by step
Start with 10-15 shrimp of good grade. Pick bright white and red banding.
A 30-40 L tank with a sponge filter, soft water, pH 6-7, and soft substrate like soil. Keep cooler, 20-24 C.
Stable soft water and good food. Keep changes small.
Females carry the eggs for about 4 weeks (about 28 days at 22 °C); young hatch as miniature adults.
Feed fine powder foods and biofilm. Keep water very stable. Cull poor colours when you grade.
- Large water changes
- Hard water
- Using copper-based medicines
Male or female
Females are larger than males and have a deeper abdomen (tail section), used to carry eggs.
Can I breed it in my tank?
- Good for a first breeding project.
Day-by-day plan
Typical for shrimp
- Day 0Berried female
Eggs are carried under the tail. Keep the water stable and don't move her.
- Day 21Hatching
After about 2–4 weeks tiny shrimp hatch. They graze on biofilm and moss.
- Day 30Growing
Keep a sponge on the filter intake. Feed powdered shrimp food a little at a time.
- Day 90Adults
They can breed themselves at about 3 months.
