Breeding the electric blue crayfish
Direct developer: the female carries eggs on her swimmerets; they hatch after 20-30 days and the young stay under her tail for a few days before going their own way. Raise young separately, as adults eat them.
Step by step
Buy a group of 1 male and 2-3 females, or a pair, in a large tank. They can be aggressive.
A 100-200 L tank with plenty of caves and plants; separate if needed. Hard, clean water.
Warm water, plenty of food and a seasonal change of temperature.
Eggs hatch after 20-30 days.
Young eat fine foods and are cannibalistic. Separate them early.
- Not separating young
- Keeping adults together with no caves
- Poor water quality
Male or female
- Male: Hooks on the first swimmerets, bigger claws
- Female: Soft swimmerets
- Look underneath
Can I breed it in my tank?
- Keep only one male in the breeding tank.
- Good for a first breeding project.
Day-by-day plan

Eggs are carried under the tail. Keep the water stable and don't move her.
- Day 21Hatching

- Day 30Growing
Keep a sponge on the filter intake. Feed powdered shrimp food a little at a time.
- Day 90Adults
They can breed themselves at about 3 months.
