Egg binding
Also called egg bound, egg retention
Signs
- A female with a very round belly that does not shrink
- Lethargy, sometimes trouble swimming
Cause
A female cannot release her eggs, often without a male or suitable spawning site.
What to do
Give her a suitable spawning spot or a mate, keep water warm and clean. See a vet if she stops eating.
If a fish is badly ill, talk to an aquatic vet.
Prevention
Correct male–female ratio and spawning sites.
