Breeding
Egg-scatterer (rarely bred) · Hard
Now bred in aquaculture: once rare in the hobby, it has become more widely available as farm production has increased. Acidic water probably helps with breeding.
Needs a large group in mature, stable conditions; pairing is hard to control.
Roomy, planted tank with very soft acidic water (pH 5-6.5), subdued light and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mat.
Rain-season style changes: soft cool water changes, a small temperature rise and heavy live feeding.
50-150 eggs
Infusoria then brine shrimp nauplii; survival is poor without very clean water.
- Hard tap water
- Overcrowding the breeding tank
- Poor water quality

Jacques Géry described this tetra in 1966, naming it after Fred Cochu of the Paramount Aquarium company. Its silvery body shines with a soft blue colour. It is known in the hobby as Cochu's blue tetra.

Name unchanged. Trade caution: the similar blue Knodus borki Zarske, 2008, described from fish imported from near Iquitos, Peru, is also sold under the name Boehlkea fredcochui (Aqualog lists it that way), so 'blue tetras' from Peru may be K. borki. A second Boehlkea, B. weitzmani from the rio Japurá, has a prominent spot near the pectoral fin (Quality Marine).

Not one of the 2024 Acestrorhamphidae tetras: Boehlkea belongs to Stevardiidae, subfamily Diapominae. Legacy had no family.

FishBase (Ref. 1672). Wikipedia says 22-27 (uncited). Quality Marine says its forest streams are relatively cool. Legacy 22-28 runs warmer than sourced.
FishBase: Boehlkea fredcochui summary - pHcorrected
FishBase 6.0-8.0; Wikipedia (uncited) 6-7.5. Wild habitat water is acidic, but captive-bred fish tolerate a wider range (Quality Marine).

Legacy had no hardness.
FishBase: Boehlkea fredcochui summary - Where it livescorrected
Legacy had no native range field (about says 'Amazon basin', which agrees). Quality Marine notes recent surveys found it quite rare in the Colombian waters.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes: Boehlkea fredcochui · Quality Marine (aquarium wholesaler): Blue Tetra (Boehlkea fredcochui) - Breedingcorrected
Legacy's 'wild-caught fish dominate the trade' is contradicted by Quality Marine, who credit aquaculture for current supply. No reliable source describes the spawning method (Wikipedia, uncited: eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, soft acidic water needed for hatching).

Legacy claims (blue, Amazon basin) are supported. The Cochu etymology comes from Wikipedia, which gives a citation for it; treat as secondary.
