Bubble-nester · Hard
Bubble-nester, not a mouthbrooder. The male builds a nest in a tube, under a leaf or among floating plants, and alone guards it; adults usually do not eat the fry, which take microworm and Artemia nauplii once free-swimming.
A conditioned pair.
40 L soft acidic planted tank with caves.
Soft acidic water and live foods.
Usually fewer than 20 eggs, sometimes up to 50. Eggs hatch in 24-48 hours and stay in the nest 3-4 more days.
Fry take baby brine shrimp from day 1.

The story of the brownorum betta
A small bubble-nesting betta from the peat swamp forests of Sarawak and West Kalimantan, Borneo, with a reddish-magenta body and a large green spot on each flank. It is named after Barbara and Allan Brown, who first collected it.
Karl-Erich Witte and Jens Schmidt described this tiny betta in 1992 from Sarawak. It is a member of the coccina group and is known for its red body with a green spot.
First described by Karl-Erich Witte & Jens Schmidt in 1992. Named for The '-orum' ending honours more than one person named Brown.
- Males have a shiny green spot on each side.
- It belongs to the coccina group of small bettas.
- It lives in very acidic peat-swamp water.

Valid name; a member of the B. coccina group (small peat-swamp bubble-nesters), NOT a mouthbrooder as the legacy data says.

Both SL. Seriously Fish 3.0 cm SL (larger) used; FishBase 2.6 cm SL. Legacy 6 cm is about double: it looks copied from a larger mouthbrooding species.

Sources disagree: Seriously Fish (preferred for husbandry) 24-30 °C; FishBase 22-26 °C. Legacy 22-27 °C overlaps both but its low end is below the Seriously Fish range.

Legacy 4-6.5; Seriously Fish gives 3.0-6.0 (habitat pH 'can be as low as 3.0 or 4.0'). FishBase gives no pH.

Seriously Fish: Betta brownorum - Group sizecorrected
Seriously Fish rates it 'best in a pair' (kept as a pair, ideally one that formed naturally, in a species tank). Legacy 1 (single fish) is not what the source advises. Mixed reports on several pairs or harems.
Seriously Fish: Betta brownorum - Temperament
Too mixed to confirm legacy 'peaceful'. Seriously Fish: best alone or with very peaceful species, since bigger fishes intimidate and outcompete it.
Seriously Fish: Betta brownorum - Swimming level
No source names an aquarium swimming level; FishBase calls it benthopelagic. Its air-breathing (labyrinth) habit does not by itself make it a top-dweller.
FishBase: Betta brownorum summary - Care level
Seriously Fish's difficulty rating is 'Moderate'. Legacy 2 (1 easy, 2 moderate, 3 hard).
Seriously Fish: Betta brownorum - Where it livescorrected
Legacy has no range field; its story's 'forest streams' should be peat swamp forest and blackwater streams. IUCN Vulnerable per FishBase. Seriously Fish: many habitats near Kuching/Matang have been lost to housing.
Seriously Fish: Betta brownorum · Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes: Betta brownorum (online version updated 21 Sep 2026) · FishBase: Betta brownorum summary - Male or female
Legacy 'longer fins, brighter' verified; 'orange-red' colour is better described as reddish-magenta (Seriously Fish).
Seriously Fish: Betta brownorum - Breedingcorrected
Major correction: legacy says 'Male mouthbrooder' and 'held by the male for 2-3 weeks'. Seriously Fish states it is a bubble-nester, as are all members of the B. coccina group (Wikipedia line refers to the sister species B. persephone and is only supporting context). FishBase gives no breeding mode.
Seriously Fish: Betta brownorum · Wikipedia: Betta persephone (B. coccina group context) - Eggs and youngcorrected
Legacy '20-40 eggs held by the male for 2-3 weeks' describes mouthbrooding, which is wrong for this species.
Seriously Fish: Betta brownorum - Storycorrected
Legacy story is wrong on breeding (mouthbrooder), colour ('orange fins and a blue-green body') and habitat ('forest streams'). Legacy variant 'Red with green spot' is correct.
