Breeding
Mouthbrooder · Hard
Paternal mouthbrooder: the male carries the eggs. Incubation reported as 14-35 days, after which the male releases free-swimming fry. Males often swallow broods if disturbed, so keep the tank quiet; the fry (5 mm+) take microworm and Artemia nauplii at once.
A well-fed pair in a roomy tank.
100 L soft acidic tank with caves, leaf litter and plants.
Soft acidic water and meaty foods.
30-60 eggs carried by the male.
Fry are large enough for baby brine shrimp, microworms and grindal worms.

The story of the brunei beauty
A large paternal mouthbrooding betta found only in Brunei and the northern tip of Sarawak, Borneo; males are red with a red patch on the gill cover and an eye-spot in the dorsal fin. It is listed as Vulnerable and Brunei has banned its export.

- It is a mouthbrooder; the male holds the eggs.
- It lives in clear, fast-flowing forest streams.
- It is known from only a small area of Brunei and Sarawak.

Both figures are SL (standard length, no tail). Seriously Fish (live aquarium fish) 10 cm SL is larger than FishBase 6.7 cm SL, so 10 cm SL is used per the size rule. Legacy 12 cm may be a total length; total length would be several cm more than 10 cm SL.
Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma · FishBase: Betta macrostoma summary - Temperaturecorrected
Seriously Fish (preferred for husbandry) 20-25 °C; FishBase 24-26 °C. Legacy 24-28 °C is warmer than both.
Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma · FishBase: Betta macrostoma summary - pHcorrected
Legacy 5-7 is too alkaline at the top; habitat pH measured 4.4-5.7 (Seriously Fish).

Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma - Smallest tankcorrected
80 x 30 cm base x 30 cm height = 72 L (Seriously Fish lists ~72 L). Legacy 100 L. Seriously Fish says this is sufficient for a pair.
Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma - Group sizecorrected
Seriously Fish rates it 'best in a pair' (kept as a pair, ideally one that formed naturally, in a species tank). Legacy 1 (single fish) is not what the source advises. Seriously Fish: 'Males tend to fight incessantly when housed together'.
Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma - Temperament
Aggression is towards its own kind; Seriously Fish says bigger or more vigorous tankmates intimidate it, and it is best alone or with very peaceful species. Legacy 'eats small fish that fit its mouth' was not found in a source.
Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma - Swimming level
No source names an aquarium swimming level; FishBase calls it benthopelagic. Its air-breathing (labyrinth) habit does not by itself make it a top-dweller.
FishBase: Betta macrostoma summary - Care levelcorrected
Seriously Fish's difficulty rating is 'Moderate'. Legacy 3 (1 easy, 2 moderate, 3 hard).
Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma - Where it livescorrected
Legacy has no range field. IUCN status Vulnerable per FishBase (Red List version 2025-2, assessed 28 Dec 2018). Seriously Fish: the Sultan of Brunei has banned its export, so most hobby fish probably come from Sarawak; locality forms differ in colour and should be kept separate.
Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma · FishBase: Betta macrostoma summary · Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes: Betta macrostoma (online version updated 21 Sep 2026) - Male or female
Legacy male 'larger, brighter red, bigger head' agrees. The 'black stripes on the tail' detail is supported in substance by FishBase ('caudal fin with transverse black and red bands') but FishBase does not say it is male-only.
Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma - Breeding
Mouthbrooder confirmed by Seriously Fish and FishBase. Legacy 'about 3 weeks' falls inside the 14-35 day range.

Seriously Fish: Betta macrostoma - Story
Legacy core claims (big mouthbrooder, Brunei and Sarawak, red) verified. 'One of the most valued wild bettas' and 'red tail' as a headline trait are not sourced; the 'large mouth' fits the name but the etymology was not checked.
