Breeding
Egg-scatterer (rarely bred) · Hard
Egg-scattering free spawner with no parental care; well-conditioned adults spawn often, and fry may even appear in a mature tank.
Needs a large group in mature, stable conditions; pairing is hard to control.
Roomy, planted tank with very soft acidic water (pH 5-6.5), subdued light and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mat.
Rain-season style changes: soft cool water changes, a small temperature rise and heavy live feeding.
50-150 eggs
Infusoria then brine shrimp nauplii; survival is poor without very clean water.
- Hard tap water
- Overcrowding the breeding tank
- Poor water quality

The story of the flag tetra
Also called the Belgian flag tetra: a black, red and yellow stripe along the flank recalls the Belgian flag. A small tetra of shaded forest streams in eastern Brazil's lower Amazon (Pará and Maranhão).
American zoologist Albert Ulrey described this tetra in 1894, originally in the genus Tetragonopterus. Its side stripe is divided into red, gold and black sections, like a small flag. It is a peaceful schooling tetra, also sold as the three-lined tetra.
First described by Albert B. Ulrey in 1894. Named for 'heterorhabdus' means differently striped.
- Its stripe is split into red, gold and black sections.
- It is also sold as the three-lined tetra.
- It was first described in the genus Tetragonopterus.

- Scientific name
Not moved to a new genus in Melo et al. 2024 (still Hyphessobrycon, subfamily Hyphessobryconinae). Seriously Fish warns Hyphessobrycon is polyphyletic, so a future genus change is possible. WRONG-NAME WARNING: the name has been misapplied to look-alike fish from the middle Amazon, Orinoco and Guianas, some now described as H. amapaensis, H. eschwartzae and H. montagi; trade 'flag tetras' may be any of these.

Subfamily Hyphessobryconinae. Legacy has no family. Melo et al. 2024 split the old Characidae; Catalog of Fishes and FishBase now place it in Acestrorhamphidae (American tetras). Seriously Fish still files it under Characidae.

FishBase 3.6 cm TL; Seriously Fish 3.5 cm SL. Larger figure 3.6 used. A 3.5 cm SL fish would be roughly 4.3 cm in total length, so legacy 4.5 cm is only slightly high if read as TL.

Legacy story says 'from the Amazon basin', which is too broad: older reports from Colombia, Suriname and the wider Amazon refer to other species.

Legacy breeding detail calls it 'rarely bred' with pairing 'hard to control'; Seriously Fish says the opposite (adults spawn often). Its spawning tank: very dim, mesh/marbles/moss, slightly acidic to neutral water at the warm end of the range.
