Breeding

Egg-scatterer · Moderate

Egg-scattering spawner with no parental care. Fill a 30-40 L tank with Java moss, wool mops or a spawning grid, add conditioned pairs, and remove the adults once eggs are seen.

Pairing

Keep a group of 6-8 and condition them with live and frozen foods; choose the fattest female and the most colourful males. A trio (1 male, 2 females) also works.

Setup

20-40 L bare tank with a mesh grid or a layer of marbles over the floor, java moss or spawning mops, a gentle sponge filter and water at 24-26 C.

What starts it

Heavy feeding for 2 weeks, then a cooler (about 2 C) water change and morning sun or a bright light.

Eggs

Eggs hatch in about 24-36 hours and fry swim freely a few days later. No sourced egg count.

Raising the fry

Infusoria then newly hatched brine shrimp.

Common mistakes
  • Leaving the adults in with the eggs (they eat them)
