The story of the madagascar rainbowfish
A Madagascar rainbowfish found only in the Mananjary River basin of eastern Madagascar, with a black side stripe and a red tail. It is Endangered in the wild. Most fish sold under this name since the 1950s are actually the related Bedotia madagascariensis.

- It belongs to Bedotiidae, a family found only in Madagascar.
- Males have black-and-red edged fins and a dark stripe on the side.

MISIDENTIFICATION: most aquarium fish sold as 'Bedotia geayi' / 'Madagascar rainbow' are Bedotia madagascariensis (Seriously Fish). Males differ: B. geayi has a distinct dark spot in a mostly red caudal fin and a red spot on the lower jaw; B. madagascariensis has black central caudal rays ringed by silver or gold. The site should decide which species this entry is for. B. longianalis and B. tricolor, once synonyms of B. geayi, are now valid.
