A conditioned pair in a species tank.
15-20 L blackwater tank with peat, leaf litter and floating plants.

The story of the persephone betta
A tiny, nearly black bubble-nesting betta from the peat swamp forests of south-western Johor, Malaysia, named after Persephone, queen of the Underworld, for its dark colour. Most of its habitat has been cleared for oil palm and it is listed as Endangered.
Dietrich Schaller described this dark betta in 1986, naming it after the Greek queen of the underworld for its near-black colour. It comes from a very small area of peat swamp.
First described by Dietrich Schaller in 1986. Named for Named after Persephone, Greek goddess of the underworld.
- It is one of the darkest bettas.
- It is part of the coccina group of small bettas.
- Its tiny range makes it vulnerable to forest clearing.

Valid name. Taxonomy change: Catalog of Fishes now lists Betta miniopinna Tan & Tan 1994 (Bintan Island, Riau Islands, Indonesia) as a synonym of B. persephone, following Ding et al. 2025 (ZooKeys 1238). Fish sold as 'miniopinna' are now this species.

Seriously Fish: Betta persephone - Group sizecorrected
Seriously Fish rates it 'best in a pair' (kept as a pair, ideally one that formed naturally, in a species tank). Legacy 1 (single fish) is not what the source advises. Seriously Fish adds it can be kept in a group in a well-planted tank, isolating pairs for breeding.
Seriously Fish: Betta persephone - Temperament
Seriously Fish: best alone or with very peaceful species; not for a standard community tank.
Seriously Fish: Betta persephone - Swimming level
No source names an aquarium swimming level; FishBase calls it benthopelagic. Its air-breathing (labyrinth) habit does not by itself make it a top-dweller.

Seriously Fish: Betta persephone - Where it livescorrected
Legacy has no range field. IUCN: current global assessment is Endangered (assessed 28 Dec 2018, published 2019 by Low; FishBase quoting Red List v2025-2). Seriously Fish's 'Critically Endangered ... since 1996' and the Wikipedia body text ('Critically endangered') are out of date; Wikipedia's own infobox says Endangered. Habitat mostly lost to oil palm plantations. The Bintan part rests on the 2025 synonymy of B. miniopinna (type locality Pulau Bintan) in Catalog of Fishes.
