- Giant gourami eats animals up to about 10 cm. Platy only grows to 6 cm.
- Oscar eats animals up to about 12 cm. Platy only grows to 6 cm.
- They need different temperatures (20–26 °C vs 27–30 °C). No setting suits both.

Breeding
Livebearer · Easy
Livebearer that breeds readily in aquaria; aquarium strains mature at 3-4 months.
Buy 1 male and 2-3 females.
40 L tank with plants and a sponge filter.
No trigger needed; females give birth about every month.
20-80 young per brood after about 24-30 days gestation (up to 4-6 weeks).
Fry are born ready to eat. Feed crushed flake, baby brine shrimp and microworms several times a day. Separate fry from adults or use plants as cover. Sort by size and sex early.

The story of the platy
Described by Günther in 1866. Many of the colour forms in shops were produced by crossing platies with swordtails (X. hellerii) or variatus platies (X. variatus). It is one of the best beginner fish, as long as the water is hard and above pH 7.
Albert Günther described the platy in 1866. In the early 20th century, hybrids with swordtails produced many colourful strains. Platies also became important in early cancer genetics research.
First described by Albert Günther in 1866.
- Crosses of platies and swordtails helped scientists study inherited melanoma.
- Most platies in shops are hybrids of several Xiphophorus species.
- Platies give birth to live young.
Sources

- Scientific name
Described by Günther in 1866; formerly Platypoecilus maculatus (Seriously Fish). Common name: southern platyfish.
FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary - Familycorrected
Legacy has no family; sourced value recorded. Subfamily Poeciliinae.
FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary - Size
FishBase gives total length (TL): 6 cm for females, 4 cm for males. Seriously Fish gives 5 cm SL. 6 cm is the female maximum.
FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary · Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus - Temperature
Matches Seriously Fish (preferred for husbandry); FishBase gives 18-25.
Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus · FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary - pH
Matches Seriously Fish. It says the species is a good beginner fish as long as 'the ph remains above neutral'.
Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus · FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary - Hardnesscorrected
Legacy has no hardness. Seriously Fish (preferred): 10-30 dGH, 'must be maintained in moderately hard or harder water'. FishBase: 9-19.
Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus · FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary - Smallest tankcorrected
60 x 30 cm base x 30 cm height = 54 L, as Seriously Fish states. Legacy 60 L is a bit more generous than the sourced minimum.
Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus - Group size
No source gives a minimum group size; Seriously Fish only advises more females than males. The legacy 1 male : 2-3 females advice fits that but no number is sourced.
Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus - Temperament
Seriously Fish adds 'even males tolerate one another'.
Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus - Swimming level
No source names a swimming level; FishBase only says benthopelagic.
FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary - Care level
Seriously Fish rates it 'Beginner' but warns many commercially bred platies are weakened by inbreeding and need pH above 7.
Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus - Where it livescorrected
Legacy has no range. FishBase preferred for range; Seriously Fish also lists Nicaragua, which FishBase does not.
FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary · Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus - Male or female
Gonopodium and smaller males verified; 'rounder female' is not stated but follows from females being larger (FishBase: female 6 cm TL vs male 4 cm).
Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus - BreedingFishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary
- Eggs and youngcorrected
Legacy brood size top (50) is too low; both sources give up to 80. Gestation ~4 weeks agrees with FishBase (24-30 days); Seriously Fish says 4-6 weeks.
FishBase: Xiphophorus maculatus summary · Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus - Story
Sources do not date the hybridisation ('decades ago' unsourced). Trade note: many shop 'platies' carry swordtail or X. variatus genes, so they are not pure X. maculatus.
