The story of the red-finned paradise fish
Described in 2002 by Freyhof and Herder from hill streams in central Vietnam, it is named for the red spots and bars in its dorsal and tail fins. It is very close to the black paradise fish (M. spechti), which lacks the red; whether they are really separate species is still debated.
Jörg Freyhof and Fabian Herder described this paradise fish in 2002 from central Vietnam. It is one of several Macropodus species recognised from Vietnam in recent decades.
First described by Jörg Freyhof & Fabian Herder in 2002. Named for 'Erythropterus' means red-finned.
- Its fins show bright red tones.
- It is closely related to the black paradise fish.
- Males build bubble nests like other paradise fish.

- Scientific name
Valid name (Freyhof & Herder, 2002). Winstanley & Clements (2008) treated it as a synonym of M. spechti; Herder et al. (2010) rejected this and both are currently valid, though Kottelat (2013) says more study is needed. Wrong-name warning: often sold as M. spechti; traded as 'red-backed paradisefish'. IUCN Red List: Data Deficient (assessed 31 August 2010, per FishBase).
