Shy and peaceful; needs land and water.
Since a 2023 split, the box turtle sold in shops is Cuora couro. True C. amboinensis lives only on Sulawesi and the Moluccas.

Warm season.
1-4 (rarely 5) large eggs per clutch, often 2; about 3 clutches a year in captivity; incubation 47 days at 30.5-31 °C to 78 days at 27.5-28.5 °C.
Hatchlings are fully independent: house them in shallow warm water with a basking spot and feed small pellets, worms and daphnia daily.

Reptile (semi-aquatic box turtle, Geoemydidae), not a fish. RENAMED: Blanck et al. (2023) split the old Cuora amboinensis. TTWG 2025 now restricts C. amboinensis (Amboina / East Indonesian box turtle) to Sulawesi and the Moluccas, and calls the widespread 'Southeast Asian box turtle' Cuora couro (subspecies couro: Indonesia, Malaysia, Borneo, Palawan etc.; kamaroma: mainland Southeast Asia, the 'Malayan box turtle'). C. lineata (Myanmar) is a separate species. Most pet-trade animals sold as 'C. amboinensis' or 'Malayan box turtle' come from Malaysia/Indonesia and are C. couro; only Sulawesi/Moluccan animals are true C. amboinensis. Check provenance. Reptile Database (still listing kamaroma under amboinensis) lags behind TTWG here.

Straight carapace length. For C. couro (the usual trade animal) TTWG gives maximum SCL male 21.9 cm, female 27.8 cm; CBFTT (old broad species) says to 25 cm. True C. amboinensis is smaller (to 20.8 cm), matching legacy 20 cm. size-pick: 25 cm used as the typical large-adult figure; the 27.8 cm record is the single maximum.
