Zebra danio
Fast, always moving near the surface; peaceful.
- Tinfoil barb eats animals up to about 5 cm. Zebra danio only grows to 5 cm.
- Giant gourami eats animals up to about 10 cm. Zebra danio only grows to 5 cm.
- They need different temperatures (18–25 °C vs 26–30 °C). No setting suits both.
- Only a narrow temperature range suits both: 24–25 °C.

Breeding
Egg-scatterer · Easy
Egg scatterer with no parental care; adults will eat eggs, so they are removed after spawning.
Buy 6 or more; condition one or two males with a female.
20 L tank with marbles or a spawning grate over the bottom and some plants.
Warm water change and morning light.
Hundreds of eggs per clutch; eggs hatch in 24-36 hours, fry free-swimming a few days later.
Feed infusoria or liquid food for days 1-3, then baby brine shrimp. Remove adults after spawning. Grow out in a larger tank.

The story of the zebra danio
A major laboratory model organism, pioneered by George Streisinger; its eggs turn transparent almost immediately, which makes development easy to watch. The zebra danio was the first species sold as GloFish (US, late 2003). GloFish are illegal in the EU.
Francis Hamilton described the zebra danio in 1822. It became one of the most popular starter fish and, since the 1970s-80s, a major model organism in biology labs worldwide. Genetically modified fluorescent forms are sold in some countries.
First described by Francis Hamilton in 1822.
- Zebrafish embryos are transparent, which helps scientists study how organs develop.
- Zebrafish can regenerate damaged heart and fin tissue.
- They are among the most widely studied vertebrates in science.

FishBase: Danio rerio summary · Seriously Fish: Danio rerio - Familycorrected
Legacy has no family. FishBase (preferred for taxonomy) uses Danionidae, subfamily Danioninae, which current classifications split from Cyprinidae; Seriously Fish still lists Cyprinidae. Suggested display: 'Danionidae (danios; formerly Cyprinidae)'.
FishBase: Danio rerio summary · Seriously Fish: Danio rerio - Size
Both sources give SL. Seriously Fish 5.0 cm SL matches legacy; FishBase gives a smaller 3.8 cm SL.
Seriously Fish: Danio rerio · FishBase: Danio rerio summary - Temperaturecorrected
Legacy max 26 is 1 °C above Seriously Fish (preferred for husbandry) and 2 °C above FishBase.

Legacy range lies inside both sources.

Legacy has no hardness; sourced value recorded.

Seriously Fish base 90 x 30 cm x 30 cm height = 81 L. It stresses that this is 'An active species'.

Legacy 3-5 years agrees with FishBase (average 3.5, max 5.5).

- Swimming level
No source names a swimming level; FishBase's 'benthopelagic' does not support 'top'. Wikipedia only notes an upturned mouth.

Legacy has no range. Seriously Fish says the species was described from the Kosi River and may be restricted to India, with older records possibly misidentified fish.

- Breeding
Seriously Fish confirms an egg scatterer with no parental care. 'Very easy' is a judgment not stated as such.

Hatch time changed: legacy ~48 h vs Seriously Fish 24-36 h. 'Hundreds' broadly supports 200-500, but no source gave that exact range.
Wikipedia: Zebrafish · Seriously Fish: Danio rerio - Story
Both legacy claims verified. Seriously Fish notes GloFish are illegal to buy, sell or own in the EU. Leopard danio is a colour morph of D. rerio (formerly 'Danio frankei'), not a separate species.
