Breeding the clown loach

Not documented as bred by hobbyists without hormones. Farms in Southeast Asia (and later Eastern Europe) breed it with hormone injections; in the wild it migrates to flooded tributaries to spawn at the start of the rainy season.

Step by step

Pairing

Buy a large group and keep for years. Maturity can take 4+ years.

Breeding tank

Farms use hormone induction. Home spawns are very rare.

What starts it

Hormone injection on farms; seasonal wild cues.

Eggs and young

Hormone-induced females release thousands of eggs (about 76,000-109,000 eggs per kg of female body weight); eggs hatch in about 18 hours at 26.5 °C.

Raising the fry

Feed live infusoria and baby brine shrimp. Sensitive to ich.

Common mistakes
  • Keeping too few
  • Poor water quality
  • Expecting home spawns

Male or female

Adult females are fuller-bodied and larger than males of the same age; a differently shaped or more deeply forked tail in males is often claimed but unproven.

Can I breed it in my tank?

  • This species is rarely bred in home tanks.
  • Hard: for experienced breeders.
