Breeding the günther's notho

Annual killifish that spawns into peat; the adults die when the pools dry and the eggs wait in the mud. In aquaria the damp peat is stored for about 8-14 weeks before wetting.

Step by step

Pairing

One male with 2-3 females.

Breeding tank

Bare 20 L tank with a bowl of peat for spawning.

What starts it

Warm water and live food.

Eggs and young

Dry the peat until damp, store it sealed at 21-24 °C for about 8-14 weeks, then wet it. If few hatch, dry and rewet a few weeks later.

Raising the fry

Baby brine shrimp from day one.

Common mistakes
  • Wrong peat
  • Keeping males together
  • Hard water

Male or female

Males are larger and blue-green with two or three red bars on the gill cover and a red tail with a black rear edge; females are smaller, yellowish brown and unmarked.

Can I breed it in my tank?

  • Good for a first breeding project.
