The story of the banded leporinus

A boldly banded characin from the Amazon and Orinoco that grows large. Young fish have about 5 dark bars that split as they grow, to about 10 in adults. Juveniles are often sold without warning of their adult size.

German naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch described this boldly banded fish in 1794 in his great work on fishes. It is a common, widespread species in Amazonian and Guianan rivers. Aquarists keep it for its striking black-and-yellow bands, though it grows large and can nibble plants.

First described by Marcus E. Bloch in 1794.

  • It can reach around 30 cm, much larger than most people expect from shop-sized juveniles.
  • Young fish have fewer, broader bands; more stripes appear as the fish grows.
  • Leporinus means 'little hare', a nod to its rabbit-like front teeth.
