The story of the celebes halfbeak

A stocky halfbeak from streams of the Maros highlands, South Sulawesi. Unlike Dermogenys, its upper and lower jaws are about equal in length, and males can carry a fleshy hook on the lower jaw. It needs cooler water (20-24 °C) than most halfbeaks.

Dietrich Vogt described this halfbeak in 1978 from southern Sulawesi. It is a colourful livebearer with a short beak and dark-tipped fins.

First described by Dietrich Vogt in 1978.

  • Males have a fleshy flap on the lower jaw.
  • It lives in fast, clear forest streams.
  • Its fins show black and red colours.
