The story of the clown killifish

A tiny killifish from coastal West Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia) with four broad dark bars, also sold as 'rocket killifish'. Described by Boulenger in 1915 from Sierra Leone.

George Boulenger described this tiny killifish in 1915. Its bold black bands and colourful tail made it a favourite for nano aquariums.

First described by George A. Boulenger in 1915. Named for 'Annulatus' means ringed.

  • It only grows to about 3–4 cm.
  • Males have a striking red, yellow and blue tail.
  • It stays near the surface among floating plants.

  • Scientific name

Boulenger, 1915. Some books and dealers use Pseudepiplatys annulatus (Aarn & Shepherd 2001); Catalog of Fishes and Seriously Fish keep it in Epiplatys because Pseudepiplatys made Epiplatys paraphyletic.
