The story of the diadem nerite snail

A small spiny ('horned') nerite of coastal fresh and brackish streams. Shell colour and pattern vary a lot (brown, reddish or yellow, striped or dotted) and some individuals lack spines.

French naturalist Constant Récluz described this snail in 1841. Small, colourful and often spiky, it is sold as the crown or diadem nerite.

First described by Constant Récluz in 1841. Named for 'Diadema' means crown, after its shell spines.

  • Its shell may carry short spines like a crown.
  • Shell colours and patterns vary a lot between individuals.
  • Its larvae need salt water, so it does not overrun aquariums.

  • Scientific name

Accepted in MolluscaBase (AphiaID 737508), authority (Récluz, 1841). Brackish/freshwater snail. Trade flag: 'horned nerite' is used for both C. diadema and C. corona (The Shrimp Farm; Aquatic Arts sells 'Clithon corona/diadema'), and shells are polymorphic, so shop labels are often unreliable.
