The story of the friedrichsthal's cichlid

A predatory yellowjacket cichlid from slow rivers and lakes of the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras; it can enter brackish water. Named after Austrian traveller and botanist Emanuel von Friedrichsthal.

Austrian zoologist Johann Jakob Heckel described this fish in 1840, making it one of the earliest Central American cichlids known to science. The specimens came from Emanuel von Friedrichsthal, an Austrian traveller who explored the region. In the hobby it is often called the yellowjacket cichlid.

First described by Johann J. Heckel in 1840. Named for Named after Austrian traveller Emanuel von Friedrichsthal, who collected in Central America.

  • It is sometimes sold as the yellowjacket cichlid.
  • It is one of the earliest Central American cichlids to receive a scientific name.
  • Like its relative the jaguar cichlid, it is a predator of smaller fishes.

  • Scientific name

Valid name. Common name yellowjacket cichlid. WARNING: yellowjackets from Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama are Parachromis loisellei (Bussing, 1989), long sold as friedrichsthalii; Fishipedia even lists loisellei as a synonym, but FishBase keeps them separate.

  • Familycorrected

    Legacy has no family field.

    FishBase: Parachromis friedrichsthalii summary
  • Size

FishBase 28 cm SL (about 33-35 cm total length), so the legacy 30 cm is within range. Fishipedia gives 25 cm max (length type not stated). No Seriously Fish profile exists.

  • Temperature

Fishipedia aquarium range matches legacy; FishBase gives a warmer wild range.

  • Lifespan

Fishipedia lists 5 years, but its page states the text comes from its data model and is still being written; not trusted. Legacy 10-12 years unsourced.

Fishipedia (with Fédération Française Aquariophilie): Parachromis friedrichsthalii
  • Temperament

Fishipedia rates behaviour 'moyennement agressif' (moderately aggressive) but strongly territorial and predatory; recommends a species-only tank.

  • Swimming level
