The story of the horned nerite snail

A small nerite snail whose shell may carry spines ('horns'); spines vary and some individuals lack them. Small size suits nano tanks.

Linnaeus described this snail in 1758, naming it 'corona' for the crown-like spines on its shell. It lives in coastal streams around tropical islands of the Indo-Pacific. Aquarists keep it as a small algae grazer that cannot overrun the tank, since its larvae need salt water.

First described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.

  • Its species name 'corona' means crown, after the shell spines.
  • It is small, usually under 2 cm across.
  • It cannot reproduce in fresh water.

  • Scientific name

Invertebrate: nerite snail (gastropod). Clithon corona (Linnaeus, 1758) is valid, but 'horned nerites' in the trade are often other Clithon species (e.g. C. diadema, which always has spines, while C. corona may or may not). Aquarium Breeder lists them only as 'Clithon sp.'. The alias 'bumblebee snail' in legacy aka is also used for unrelated snails and should be dropped.
