The story of the longnose distichodus

A Congo-basin characin with a long, pointed snout and 6-8 dark vertical bars on an orange to reddish body; the bars persist for life, though juveniles are the most colourful.

Dutch zoologist Louis Schilthuis described this fish in 1891 from the Congo. Its long, pointed snout and yellow-and-black bands make it easy to tell apart from its six-barred cousin. It grows large and feeds mainly on plants.

First described by Louis Schilthuis in 1891.

  • Its snout is longer and more pointed than in most Distichodus.
  • It feeds largely on plants and soft vegetation.
  • It can grow to around 40 cm.

  • Scientific name

Described by Schilthuis, 1891; D. leptorhynchus is a synonym. Similar to the commoner D. sexfasciatus but with a narrow, pointed snout.

  • Familycorrected

Legacy has no family. Seriously Fish still uses Citharinidae (older, broader grouping).

  • Sizecorrected

FishBase 38 cm TL (total length); Seriously Fish 37.5 cm SL (standard length). Legacy 60 cm is far too large; Seriously Fish stresses it has "a much smaller adult size" than D. sexfasciatus.

  • Temperaturecorrected

Both sources 22-26; legacy 23-28 runs warmer.

  • pHcorrected

Legacy 6.0-7.5; Seriously Fish lower limit 6.5. FishBase gives no pH.

  • Hardnesscorrected

    Legacy has no hardness.

    Seriously Fish: Distichodus lusosso
  • Smallest tankcorrected

150 x 45 x 45 cm = 303,750 cm³ = ~304 L (Seriously Fish states 275 L, which does not match its own dimensions). Legacy 1,000 L follows from its oversized 60 cm length; ~300 L is the sourced minimum for one fish, more for a group.

    Seriously Fish: Distichodus lusosso
  • Group size

Can be kept singly; a group may reduce aggression if space allows.

  • Where it livescorrected

Legacy has no range field. Seriously Fish also lists Cameroon, not supported by Catalog of Fishes or FishBase.

  • Male or female

Consistent with legacy "no visible difference".

    Seriously Fish: Distichodus lusosso
  • Breeding

Legacy "Not bred in aquaria" verified; legacy spawning recipe is speculative and unsourced.

    Seriously Fish: Distichodus lusosso
  • Storycorrected

Legacy says "long, slender ... with a black stripe": sources describe vertical bars, not a single stripe. Sources differ on whether the pattern fades with age (FishBase: bars persist; Seriously Fish: colour fades).
