A small, mottled brownish shrimp with sparse stripes from rivers of southern Sulawesi. Unlike the lake species it is a generalist: cheap, hardy and easy to breed.

This shrimp was described in 2009 from Sulawesi. It is sold in the hobby as the Malawa shrimp. It is hardier than many other Sulawesi shrimp.

First described by Cai, Wowor & Choy in 2009. Named for Named after German zoologist Erich Woltereck.

  • It is hardier than most Sulawesi shrimp.
  • It feeds on algae and biofilm.
  • It is often sold as 'Malawa shrimp'.

WRONG-NAME FLAG: legacy maps "Malawa shrimp" to Caridina woltereckae, which is a different animal (the Sulawesi harlequin shrimp, endemic to Lake Towuti, hard to keep). The cheap, easy, speckled brown "Malawa" shrimp is a river species, sold as Caridina pareparensis / C. pareparensis parvidentata; WoRMS now treats parvidentata as its own species, Caridina parvidentata Roux, 1904. Exact wild origin of hobby stock is unknown (Aquarium Glaser). All other fields below are for the Malawa shrimp, not C. woltereckae. Invertebrate: freshwater atyid shrimp.
