Behavior

Peaceful; keep a group of 6 or more in a small planted tank.

Food

Baby brine shrimp, daphnia, microworms and fine flake.

Tap a food to see what it is.

Male or female

Males are much more colourful, slimmer, and have longer dorsal and anal fins. Females also show red-orange fin and body markings, only duller; in males the genital papilla is a short tube, in females it is two-lobed.

Health

Breeding

Egg-carrier (egg deposition on plants) · Easy

Egg layer: eggs are fertilised in one mass, hang from the female's vent for a while, then are wiped off singly or in small clumps on fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Adults ignore eggs but eat free-swimming fry.

Pairing

A group of 6 or more.

Setup

A 20 L planted tank with java moss or spawning mops.

What starts it

Warm water and live food.

Eggs

Batches of 10-20 eggs every few days, or daily in good condition; incubation typically 1-3 weeks depending on temperature.

Raising the fry

Feed infusoria, then baby brine shrimp.

Common mistakes
  • Large tankmates
  • No cover for eggs
  • Cold water

The story of the orange-fin ricefish

A tiny ricefish known from a single stream on Muna Island, Southeast Sulawesi, described in 2010. It caused a sensation (and high prices) when it first reached the trade. Easy to keep, but best with other very small fish.

Lynne Parenti and Renny Hadiaty described this ricefish in 2010 from Muna Island off south-east Sulawesi. Its blue body and red-orange fins quickly made it a favourite in the nano-aquarium hobby. It is now widely bred in captivity.

First described by Lynne R. Parenti & Renny K. Hadiaty in 2010. Named for Named after Indonesian biologist Daisy Wowor.

  • Ricefish are related to the famous Japanese medaka.
  • Females often carry their egg cluster under the belly for a while.
  • It was described only in 2010 yet is already common in the hobby.

  • Scientific name

Valid name, described 2010. Catalog of Fishes habitat: freshwater only (no brackish water needed). Seriously Fish calls it 'Daisy's ricefish' (after Daisy Wowor); 'orange-fin ricefish' is a trade name. Sulawesi Oryzias are often confused: Seriously Fish warns similar fish such as O. sp. 'Kendari' and O. wolasi should not be kept together or hybridised.
