Food

Frozen bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp, small sinking pellets and live baby brine shrimp.

Tap a food to see what it is.

Male or female

Males are larger, more colourful and have longer fins than females.

Health

Common problems. Tap one to see the signs. This is a guide, not a diagnosis.

Breeding

Cave spawner (harem) · Hard

Cave spawner that lays its eggs in crevices or cavities. The female cares for the eggs and fry; in small tanks remove the male, as she can become hyper-aggressive. Pairs are often monogamous, so a harem is not needed.

Pairing

Keep a single pair. This species is monogamous, so harems don't work.

Setup

A 40 L tank with a sponge or gentle filter, fine sand, many small caves, terracotta pots and leaf litter, with soft, slightly acidic water.

What starts it

Soft, slightly acidic water, warmer temperatures, frequent water changes and live or frozen foods.

Eggs

40-90 eggs

Raising the fry

The female guards the wrigglers and then the free-swimming fry; feed microworms and newly hatched brine shrimp from day 4-5.

Common mistakes
  • Too few hiding places
  • Hard, alkaline water
  • Several males in a small tank

The story of the panduro dwarf cichlid

A dwarf cichlid from the Rio Ucayali and Rio Tahuayo in northern Peru, described in 1997 and named after the Panduro brothers, the exporters who first shipped it. It belongs to the A. nijsseni group, and the lower jaw sticking out past the upper sets it apart.

This dwarf cichlid has been traded as Apistogramma sp. 'Panduro', a form closely related to A. cacatuoides. It comes from Peru and is mostly sold as captive-bred fish. It is still widely known by its trade name.

  • It is closely related to the cockatoo dwarf cichlid, A. cacatuoides.
  • Males have a lyre-shaped tail.
  • Females turn yellow when guarding fry.

  • Scientific namecorrected

Not an undescribed "sp." any more: formally described as Apistogramma panduro Römer, 1997. Also traded under the confusing name A. sp. "pandurini" and as blue panda / blue sky / azure cichlid; DATZ code A183 (a possibly conspecific Rio Tamshiyacu form is A184). Named after the Peruvian exporters Panduro Pinedo, who first recognised it as new.

  • Group size

Kept as a single pair; no minimum group number given.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma panduro
  • Temperamentcorrected

Legacy "p" (peaceful) understates it: aggressive to its own kind, and a guarding female may become hyper-aggressive in small tanks. Captive-raised fish suit a community with other species.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma panduro
  • Care level

Seriously Fish difficulty rating: 4 of 8 measures, "Moderate". Legacy care 2 of 3.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma panduro

Legacy has no range field. FishBase gives only "Peru (exact locality unknown)".

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma panduro
  • Male or female

The lyre tail with orange-red edges in the legacy text is not described in the sources.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma panduro
  • Breedingcorrected

Female brood care confirmed, but the legacy harem set-up (one male, 2-4 females) does not fit: Seriously Fish says pairs often stay monogamous.

Seriously Fish: Apistogramma panduro · FishBase: Apistogramma panduro summary
  • Storycorrected

Legacy calls it an undescribed locality form closely related to A. cacatuoides. It is a described species in the A. nijsseni group; the A. cacatuoides group is only a neighbouring group in the same sublineage.
