The story of the red-nose shrimp

A mostly transparent shrimp with a very long red rostrum ("nose") that regrows if broken. It lives in brackish and fresh water in the wild and can be kept in a freshwater aquarium, but its larvae need brackish water.

Dutch zoologist Johannes de Man described the red-nose shrimp in 1892. Its long red-tipped rostrum gives it its name. Its larvae need salt water to develop.

First described by Johannes G. de Man in 1892.

  • Its long rostrum has a red tip.
  • Its larvae develop in salt water.
  • It often struggles in pure fresh water.
