Behavior

Active, peaceful schooler; keep eight or more and avoid very boisterous tankmates.

Food

Flakes, micro pellets and frozen or live daphnia and brine shrimp.

Tap a food to see what it is.

Male or female

Adult males are noticeably slimmer and more colourful, especially in the unpaired and pelvic fins; the dorsal fin of a breeding male is red with a black margin and rows of black spots.

Health

Common problems. Tap one to see the signs. This is a guide, not a diagnosis.

Breeding

Egg-scatterer · Moderate

Egg-scattering free spawner with no parental care; bred in a separate, very dimly lit tank with mesh, marbles or fine-leaved plants, slightly acidic to neutral water at the warm end of its range; adults eat the eggs.

Pairing

Keep a group of 6-8 and condition them with live and frozen foods; choose the fattest female and the most colourful males. A trio (1 male, 2 females) also works.

Setup

20-40 L bare tank with a mesh grid or a layer of marbles over the floor, java moss or spawning mops, a gentle sponge filter and water at 24-26 C.

What starts it

Heavy feeding for 2 weeks, then a cooler (about 2 C) water change and morning sun or a bright light.

Eggs

Eggs hatch in 24-48 hours; fry free-swimming about 24 hours later. No egg count found.

Raising the fry

Infusoria, then newly hatched brine shrimp and microworms.

Common mistakes
  • Leaving the adults in with the eggs (they eat them)
  • Skipping the conditioning period
  • Keeping the breeding tank too cold or too dirty

The story of the stoliczka's barb

A small, peaceful barb from north-eastern India, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos with a black blotch behind the gill cover and another on the tail base. It is often confused with Pethia ticto. It tolerates fairly cool water (from 18 °C) and is rated easy to keep.

British zoologist Francis Day described Stoliczka's barb in 1871 and named it after Ferdinand Stoliczka, who worked for the Geological Survey of India. It resembles the ticto barb and was once regarded as part of that species. Much of the aquarium stock is now captive-bred.

First described by Francis Day in 1871. Named for Named after Czech-born naturalist Ferdinand Stoliczka.

  • It is often sold as a ticto barb because of their similar look.
  • Males show a red band in the dorsal fin when in breeding colour.
  • It is hardy and tolerates a range of water conditions.
