The story of the sunset nerite snail

A euryhaline nerite from coastal mangroves and streams that also lives far inland in pure fresh water; an eager grazer of algae films that tends to climb out of an uncovered tank.

Carl Linnaeus described this snail in 1758 in the famous 10th edition of Systema Naturae. Its warm orange-brown shells earned it the trade name 'sunset nerite'.

First described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.

  • Neritodryas snails often climb out of the water, so tanks need a tight lid.
  • It was named in the same book that founded modern animal naming.
  • Like other nerites, it needs brackish water to breed.

Sources

9 facts checked with sources

  • Scientific name

Accepted name in MolluscaBase. Aquarium Glaser notes the same snails reach the trade under other names (Neritina coromandeliana, N. turrita colour form, N. variegata); the trade name "sunset nerite" is not tied to one species, so identity of shop snails is uncertain. MolluscaBase flags the species as terrestrial (isTerrestrial=1), reflecting its amphibious habits.

MolluscaBase (via WoRMS): Neritodryas cornea (Linnaeus, 1758), AphiaID 850635
  • Familycorrected

Legacy has no family; recorded as sourced.

MolluscaBase (via WoRMS): Neritodryas cornea (Linnaeus, 1758), AphiaID 850635
  • Size

No species figure found. Genus Neritodryas: shell up to 40 mm (Wikipedia citing Symonds & Pacaud 2010), so legacy 3 cm is plausible but unconfirmed.

Wikipedia: Neritodryas (genus; cites Symonds & Pacaud 2010, Zootaxa 2606)
  • pHcorrected

Only guidance: pH around 7 or slightly above. Legacy 7.5-8.5 is not contradicted but not supported either; no upper limit given.

Aquarium Glaser (German wholesale importer; Frank Schäfer), 18 May 2020: Neritodryas cornea
  • Hardness

Only qualitative ("not too soft"); no dGH figures.

Aquarium Glaser (German wholesale importer; Frank Schäfer), 18 May 2020: Neritodryas cornea
  • Care level

Glaser implies easy care but does not rate it; left unknown.

Aquarium Glaser (German wholesale importer; Frank Schäfer), 18 May 2020: Neritodryas cornea
  • Where it livescorrected

Legacy has no range. Exact species range not found in one source; pieced together from Haynes (Oceania genus account) and Glaser (Thai imports). Note Haynes attributes the names to authors differently from MolluscaBase.

Aquarium Glaser (German wholesale importer; Frank Schäfer), 18 May 2020: Neritodryas cornea · Haynes (1988) Notes on the stream neritids of Oceania. Micronesica 21 (peer-reviewed)
  • Breedingcorrected

Legacy says larvae need brackish water; the source says they need the sea (marine).

Aquarium Glaser (German wholesale importer; Frank Schäfer), 18 May 2020: Neritodryas cornea
  • Storycorrected

Legacy says it "does best with a little salt"; Glaser advises ordinary not-too-soft fresh water at about pH 7. Shell colour claim (browns and reds) not checked.
