Tap a food to see what it is.

Male or female

Males are larger, more colourful (blue-edged fins) and have longer fins; females are smaller and yellow with dark markings when breeding.

Health

Common problems. Tap one to see the signs. This is a guide, not a diagnosis.

Breeding

Cave spawner (harem) · Moderate

Harem cave spawner: eggs are laid in a cave or crevice; the female guards eggs and fry while the male defends the territory and may court other females.

Pairing

Keep one male with 2-4 females; each female claims a cave, pot or coconut shell.

Setup

A 40 L tank with a sponge or gentle filter, fine sand, many small caves, terracotta pots and leaf litter, with soft, slightly acidic water.

What starts it

Soft, slightly acidic water, warmer temperatures, frequent water changes and live or frozen foods.

Eggs

Up to about 100 eggs laid in a cave; they hatch in 36-72 hours depending on temperature, and fry swim freely a few days later.

Raising the fry

The female guards the wrigglers and then the free-swimming fry; feed microworms and newly hatched brine shrimp from day 4-5.

Common mistakes
  • Too few hiding places
  • Hard, alkaline water
  • Several males in a small tank

The story of the three-striped dwarf cichlid

A small dwarf cichlid ranging from the Guaporé drainage through the Paraguay basin (including Mato Grosso) to the middle Paraná. Males show blue edging on the fins.

Eigenmann and Kennedy described this dwarf cichlid in 1903, originally in another genus. It is named for three dark stripes on its body. Males have a long, pointed dorsal fin.

First described by Carl H. Eigenmann & Clarence H. Kennedy in 1903.

  • Males have extended front dorsal fin rays.
  • Its three stripes give it the name 'trifasciata'.
  • Females care for the brood in hidden caves.

  • Scientific name

Valid name (Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903), per FishBase and Seriously Fish. Synonyms include Heterogramma trifasciatum maciliense Haseman, 1911 and Apistogramma trifasciatum haraldschultzi Meinken, 1960. DATZ code A204; possibly conspecific forms A205/A206 (A206 from the rio Guaporé in red and blue forms). Note the legacy id 'triple' is not a name used in the trade.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • Familycorrected

Legacy has no family field. FishBase: subfamily Geophaginae, family Cichlidae (its wording was summarised rather than quoted by the fetch tool).

    FishBase: Apistogramma trifasciata summary
  • Sizecorrected

Seriously Fish: males 5.5 cm SL, females 4.0 cm SL (standard length). Legacy 6.5 cm is about the male's total length, so it overstates SL. FishBase gives about 3.8 cm SL.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • Temperaturecorrected

Seriously Fish (preferred for husbandry) 20-25°C; FishBase gives a warmer 26-29°C. Legacy 22-27 overlaps both; Seriously Fish's range recorded.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • pHcorrected

Seriously Fish 5.0-7.0 (FishBase 6.0-6.5). Legacy 6.0-7.5 runs above both; Seriously Fish adds it tolerates slightly soft, neutral water better than some congeners.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • Hardnesscorrected

Legacy has no hardness; Seriously Fish range recorded (FishBase dH 2-5).

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • Smallest tankcorrected

    45 x 30 x 30 cm = 40.5 L (~41 L) for a single pair; larger for a group. Legacy 50 L is slightly more generous.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • Temperament

Seriously Fish recommends captive-raised fish for community tanks, but mature males are aggressive to other males. No source labels it simply peaceful; legacy 'p' is optimistic for males.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • Where it livescorrected

Legacy has no range field (its 'about' text, Paraguay and Mato Grosso, agrees). FishBase gives the same range. IUCN: Least Concern (assessed 4 November 2020, per FishBase).

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • Male or female

    Legacy verified in substance.

    Seriously Fish: Apistogramma trifasciata
  • Breeding

Seriously Fish describes female brood care; FishBase says both parents guard, which is not the usual aquarium observation.

Legacy 30-80 eggs fits within FishBase's maximum; hatch time added from Seriously Fish.
