Behavior

Peaceful but huge and fast; eats small fish and plants as it grows.

Food

Pellets, vegetables.

Tap a food to see what it is.

Male or female

Hard to sex; mature females are usually deeper-bodied than males, especially when full of eggs.

Health

Common problems. Tap one to see the signs. This is a guide, not a diagnosis.

Breeding

Egg-scatterer · Hard

Not known to have been bred in home aquaria. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care; farms induce spawning with hormones.

Pairing

Buy several young fish as a group; they get large (up to 30 cm). Pairing is hard to confirm.

Setup

Very large tank or pond (1000 L+) with lots of space. Commercial farms use ponds.

What starts it

Large space, warm water and rainy-season type changes; hormones are used on farms.

Eggs

Thousands of eggs per female (about 12,500-15,800 in farmed broodstock of ~200 g); eggs hatched in about 23 hours.

Raising the fry

Feed infusoria, then baby brine shrimp and crushed flakes. Fry grow fast on plenty of food. Sort by size to stop cannibalism.

Common mistakes
  • Tank far too small
  • Poor conditioning
  • Fish not mature

The story of the tinfoil barb

Sold small, but grows to about 35 cm (standard length) and needs a tank at least 2 m long. Shops report it is one of the fish most often returned after outgrowing its tank. Described by Pieter Bleeker in 1854.

Pieter Bleeker described the tinfoil barb in 1854. Young fish are sold as small silver fish with red fins, but they can grow over 30 cm and need a big tank. In its home region it is also caught and eaten as a food fish.

First described by Pieter Bleeker in 1854.

  • It can grow to more than 30 cm long.
  • It is eaten as a food fish in Southeast Asia.
  • Its red fins with black edges stand out against the silver body.
