The story of the wolf's glassfish

A large, see-through glassfish from Southeast Asian rivers and floodplains that can reach about 20 cm (usually less in aquaria) and eats any small tankmates. Common in its home countries, where it is a food fish.

Pieter Bleeker described this glassfish in 1850. It is the giant of the Asian glassfishes, reaching around 20 cm. It is occasionally imported for larger tanks.

First described by Pieter Bleeker in 1850.

  • It is among the largest Asian glassfish species.
  • Like other glassfishes, it has a partly see-through body.
  • It is a predator of small fish and invertebrates.

  • Scientific name

Valid name (often misspelled 'wolffi'). Catalog of Fishes habitat: freshwater only; Seriously Fish: 'This is a freshwater species and does not require the addition of salt to its tank.' The legacy breeding setup's 'brackish tendency' is wrong. Named after J. Wolff (FishBase eponymy), so the common name is 'Wolff's', not 'Wolf's'; standard names are duskyfin glass fish / duskyfin glassy perchlet.

  • Familycorrected

FishBase: Parambassis wolffii, Duskyfin glassy perchlet · Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes: Parambassis wolffii
  • Sizecorrected

Both sources 20 cm SL (standard length). Seriously Fish adds it grows to around 20 cm 'though not usually in aquaria'; FishBase common length 9.4 cm SL.

  • Temperaturecorrected

Both sources 18-25 °C; legacy 22-28 is too warm at the top.

Seriously Fish: Parambassis wolffii (Duskyfin Glass Fish) · FishBase: Parambassis wolffii, Duskyfin glassy perchlet
  • pHcorrected

Legacy top of 8.5 exceeds the sourced 8.0. Legacy 'mistakes' list calls soft acidic water a mistake; 6.5 is within range.

  • Hardnesscorrected

Legacy had no hardness; value is new.

Seriously Fish: Parambassis wolffii (Duskyfin Glass Fish)
  • Smallest tankcorrected

    120 x 30 x 30 cm = 108,000 cm³ = 108 L (Seriously Fish minimum). Legacy 250 L is more generous; reasonable for a group of 6 fish up to 20 cm, but not the sourced minimum.
