Frozen cubes of mixed prey and plant ingredients, bound with a gel (alginate, carrageenan or gelatin) and fortified with vitamins. Examples: SFBB Cichlid Delight (turkey heart, brine shrimp, daphnia, menhaden oil, spirulina, vitamins; min 9% protein, max 88% moisture). Ocean Nutrition Discus Formula (casein, bloodworms, mysis, brine shrimp, salmon eggs, sea lettuce, spirulina, gel binder; min 11.7% protein, max 82.6% moisture).
For: Discus and other carnivorous cichlids (Central/South American: discus, angelfish, oscars, Jack Dempseys; carnivorous Africans such as frontosas).
How to feed: Makers say do not thaw: drop the frozen cube in. Ocean Nutrition: 2-3 times a day, what is eaten in five minutes. SFBB: what is eaten in three minutes. Remove leftovers. If you do thaw, use a cup of tank water and pour in everything without straining, or the water-soluble vitamins and pigments are lost. Never thaw in hot water or a microwave.
Careful: Frozen diets avoid the parasites and disease linked to live food (maker's claim). Do not refreeze fully thawed cubes; discard if they smell bad. Remove uneaten food to protect water quality.
Examples you may see in shops: San Francisco Bay Brand Cichlid Delight (frozen cubes), Ocean Nutrition Discus Formula (frozen cubes). Not endorsements.
