Fast-growing creeping plant whose leaves are striped silver/white on green or purple, with purple undersides; trails over the edges of a paludarium land area.
Not an underwater plant. It is a land plant and rots if you plant it under water. Keep its leaves in the air, for example on the land part of a paludarium or with only its roots in the water.
Toxic to pets. Low-severity irritant: if eaten by pets or people it can irritate mouth and stomach; the sap causes skin irritation (contact dermatitis). NC State lists it as a problem for cats and dogs. No source found on toxicity to fish.
Check your local laws. T. zebrina: environmental weed in Queensland and New South Wales but not declared or noxious in any Australian state; no NZ listing found. Look-alike T. fluminensis (also sold as "wandering jew"): National Pest Plant Accord species in New Zealand (sale, breeding and distribution banned nationwide, all cultivars); in Australia not declared in Queensland or NSW (general biosecurity duty only), and listed as prohibited until assessed in Western Australia. Never throw it into ponds, rivers or drains.
