Behavior

Peaceful but sensitive. Needs stable, warm, hard water; pairs well with other Sulawesi shrimp.

Food

Powdered food, biofilm and mineral foods.

Tap a food to see what it is.

Male or female

Females are larger than males and have a deeper carapace; berried females carry dark-red eggs under the abdomen.

Health

Common problems. Tap one to see the signs. This is a guide, not a diagnosis.

Breeding

Berried livebearer-style (free-swimming shrimplets) ·

Breeds in fresh water in the aquarium: eggs are large and the young hatch as miniature shrimp with no larval stage. Breeding is slow and juvenile survival is often low; stable water and plenty of biofilm are key.

Pairing

Keep 10-15; breeding happens in stable warm hard water.

Setup

30-40 L tank with alkaline, mineral-rich water (pH 7.8-8.5, GH 6-8, KH 3-5), 28-30 C, rocks and caves.

What starts it

Stable hot hard water; avoid water change shock.

Eggs

About 8-15 large eggs per brood (wild females 8-14; aquarium 10-15). Incubation time not well documented.

Raising the fry

Tiny adults; graze on biofilm and powdered food.

Common mistakes
  • Treating them like Neocaridina
  • Cool or soft water
  • Overfeeding

The story of the cardinal shrimp

A red shrimp with white spots and bright white claws ("gloves") from Lake Matano, Sulawesi, described in 2009 and named after the German company Dennerle, which supported the expedition. It needs warm, alkaline, very stable water unlike most aquarium shrimp.

Kristina von Rintelen and Yixiong Cai described this shrimp in 2009. It lives only in Lake Matano, an ancient lake in Sulawesi. Its red body with white spots makes it highly sought after.

First described by Kristina von Rintelen & Yixiong Cai in 2009. Named for Named after the German aquarium company Dennerle.

  • It lives only in Lake Matano.
  • It needs warm, hard, alkaline water.
  • Lake Matano is one of the deepest lakes in Southeast Asia.
