The story of the golden rudd

A hardy European fish with red fins and a red-spotted eye. The golden form is an old pond favourite that eats duckweed and catches mosquitoes at the surface.

Linnaeus described the rudd in 1758 as Cyprinus erythrophthalmus. The golden rudd is a coloured form popular in ponds. It feeds mainly near the surface.

First described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Named for 'erythrophthalmus' means 'red-eyed'.

  • Its upturned mouth suits feeding at the surface.
  • Its fins are bright red.
  • It can hybridise with roach and bream.
