The story of the fancy goldfish
Goldfish were bred from wild crucian carp in China over more than 1,000 years of domestication and selective breeding.
Goldfish were bred in China from wild, olive-coloured Carassius fish more than a thousand years ago, first in temple and garden ponds. They reached Japan in the 1500s and Europe by the late 1600s. Linnaeus described the species in 1758, and breeders have since created many fancy shapes.
First described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.
- Goldfish were first kept in ponds in China.
- Fancy goldfish varieties number in the hundreds.
- Well-kept goldfish can live for 20 years or more.

Valid name Carassius auratus (Linnaeus, 1758).
FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish - Family
Subfamily Cyprininae.
FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish - Size
All TL. 20 cm sits inside the sourced range (common 10 cm TL, grows 15-45 cm TL, max 48 cm TL). Fancy varieties usually stay smaller than common/comet types.
FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish · Animal Diversity Web (University of Michigan): Carassius auratus - Temperature
Site range lies within the tolerance ranges in FishBase and ADW. PetMD's narrower aquarium range is 65-75 F = 18-24 °C; if the site wants an indoor-aquarium comfort range, 18-24 °C is the sourced one. The 10 °C low end is fine for ponds (ADW: breeding starts at 10 °C).
FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish · Animal Diversity Web (University of Michigan): Carassius auratus · PetMD: Goldfish Care Sheet (Melissa Witherell, DVM) - pH
Site range sits inside FishBase 6.0-8.0. PetMD gives 6.5-7.5.

Exact match to FishBase.
FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish - Smallest tank
FishBase gives a 100 cm tank length. 100 x 35 x 35 cm = 122.5 L; 100 x 40 x 40 cm = 160 L. Site 150 L is within that range. PetMD's 20 US gal (76 L) is for a single juvenile only.
FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish · PetMD: Goldfish Care Sheet (Melissa Witherell, DVM) - Group sizecorrected
Sources disagree: FishBase (aquarium atlas Ref. 51539) says 5+, PetMD says they can be kept alone. Neither supports 2. FishBase value used; the site may prefer to show 1 with a 'social, does well in groups' note.
FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish · PetMD: Goldfish Care Sheet (Melissa Witherell, DVM) - Lifespancorrected
Typical captive lifespan per PetMD is 10-15 years (ADW says 5-10 in captivity). 20 years is possible but not typical; FishBase max reported age 41 years.
PetMD: Goldfish Care Sheet (Melissa Witherell, DVM) · Animal Diversity Web (University of Michigan): Carassius auratus · FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish - Temperament
PetMD notes they may still eat much smaller fish or fry, which the site's eatsSmallFish trait covers.
PetMD: Goldfish Care Sheet (Melissa Witherell, DVM) - Swimming level
FishBase calls it benthopelagic (bottom and mid-water). No source states 'all levels' in substance.
FishBase: Carassius auratus, Goldfish - Care level
PetMD Difficulty of Care: Beginner.

The Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) ancestry is an older idea that genetic studies have not supported; the ancestor is wild C. auratus (crucian carp) from southern China.

Site claim (spring spawning in ponds) is supported. Legacy 'hatch in 4-7 days' is inside ADW's 2-9 days; Jamaica MoA saw about 4 days. Legacy 'hundreds to thousands of eggs' agrees (ADW 2000-4000; Jamaica MoA 500-1000 per spawn).
