Stem Plants

Anacharis

Elodea densa

A very fast-growing stem plant that prefers cooler water and soaks up nutrients, which helps against algae.

Check your local laws. New Zealand: on the National Pest Plant Accord (unwanted organism, banned from sale, propagation and distribution). Not on the EU Union list (Elodea nuttallii is listed, not E. densa) and not on the US Federal Noxious Weed list. Present in Florida but not considered a problem species there. Never throw it into ponds, rivers or drains.

How to keep it

  • Low light is enough; it grows faster with more light and CO2
  • Good for cooler, harder water
  • Trim regularly; it grows very fast
  • Keeping it long-term in warm tanks (it tolerates warmth only for a short time)
